Take control of your privacy

May 2, 2020

With much of our lives now existing online, your personal information may be easily accessible to businesses seeking to use your data for marketing purposes. Worse yet, it may be easily accessible to cyber criminals looking to misuse your identity or access your bank account.

You can help to protect your information and take control of your data by checking your account settings and choosing carefully what you share online.

Here are some practical steps you can take:

  • Be sure to use strong passwords across your accounts, and (as tempting as it might be) it’s safest not to use the same password for each one.
  • Consider switching off location tracking/services on your devices.
  • Check which of your apps are accessing your personal information. They will have asked your permission the first time you used them but you can change these settings at any time.
  • Before posting online, ask yourself whether you would share the information with a stranger or whether you would be okay with the information being shared broadly.
  • Be careful that your address or current location are not visible in photos and content that you post online.
